About me

Hello, I’m Layla. I’m a Scottish reader living in Tokyo with my wife and my bookshelves. I’ve been reading books ever since I learned how. On the 3rd September 2013 (an arbitrary date linked to a resolution made whilst reading and hiding from rioters on holiday in Colombia the previous week), I started this book blog.

Why a book blog? Well, I really like writing blogs. But while topics I have written about throughout my life have evolved, my love of reading remains constant. So I thought it might be fun to try writing and sharing and talking about what I have read each year.

Why is it called ‘Reading Shoes’? I always loved Noel Streatfeild as a child (and indeed as an adult). I devoured her books passionately. But I also lamented that amidst all the talents her various characters possessed, my own ‘talent’, reading, was never celebrated. I loved ‘Ballet Shoes’. I adored ‘White Boots’ (‘Skating Shoes’ in the US). But where was ‘Reading Shoes’? That was the book I wanted to read! This blog is named in its honour.
